A simple record of the work, servicing and paperwork for your home pays off when you sell, claim on insurance or hire a trade. Here is what to write down, and how to keep it: spreadsheet, paper logbook or app.
Free to use. No card needed. Built for UK homes.
A home maintenance record is a running log of what has been done to your home, when, by whom, and what it cost, with the paperwork attached. It takes a few minutes each time and saves hours when you need it.

| Record | What to keep | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Servicing and safety | Boiler service, gas safety, electrical inspection (EICR), chimney sweeping, alarm tests, with dates and certificates | Proves checks were done; shows when the next one is due |
| Repairs and jobs | Date, what was done, who did it, cost, a photo before and after | Builds a history of the property and its problems |
| Building work and improvements | Plans, building regulations completion certificates, planning permission, installer certificates, guarantees | Buyers and solicitors often ask for these |
| Appliances and systems | Make, model, serial number, install date, manual, warranty length | Makes warranty claims and repairs easier |
| Receipts and invoices | Anything over a figure you choose, plus all work done by trades | Evidence of spending and of who did the work |
| Contacts | Trades you have used, with what they did and whether you would use them again | Saves searching next time |
| Home basics | Stopcock and fuse board locations, meter readings, paint colours, key dates | Useful in an emergency and for any new occupier |
