The short answer

For most UK homes, a standard 7kW smart charger fitted to an existing driveway costs somewhere in the region of £900 to £1,300 all in, and the job takes a competent installer half a day. That covers the unit, up to around ten metres of cable, and the paperwork. The number climbs when your consumer unit is full, your main fuse is undersized, or the charger has to sit a long way from the meter — and those are the things that turn a tidy quote into an awkward one.

The single most useful thing you can do before booking anyone is understand what is actually behind your meter cupboard, because that, far more than the brand of charger, is what you are really paying for.

What a home EV charger actually costs in 2026

It helps to split the cost into three parts, because installers bundle them and it is easy to lose track of what you are being charged for.

The unit

None of these are rip-offs — they are the difference between a safe install and a dangerous one — but they are why an on-the-day quote can jump by a few hundred pounds.

Grants: who still qualifies in 2026

Here is the part the price comparison sites skip. A home EV charger draws around 32 amps continuously for hours at a time, which is a heavier, longer sustained load than almost anything else in your house. Whether your home can take that cleanly comes down to three things.

Your main fuse and consumer unit

Your incoming main fuse is usually 60, 80 or 100 amps. A modern 100A supply comfortably runs a charger alongside a shower and an oven; an older 60A or 80A supply may need load management — a smart feature that dials the charger back when the rest of the house is busy — rather than an expensive supply upgrade. Your consumer unit (the fuse board) also needs a spare way and enough headroom. If it is an older board without modern RCD protection, the electrician may recommend work there too.

Earthing and protection

The regulations require specific protection for outdoor charge points, including protection against a rare fault condition on the type of earthing (known as PME) that many UK homes use. Modern chargers with the right built-in protection usually satisfy this without a separate earth rod, but a good installer checks rather than assumes. The cable route
