How Often Should You Bleed Your Radiators? (and Other Boiler-Saving Habits)

Your radiator is cold at the top, warm at the bottom, and your heating bill keeps creeping up. You should bleed your radiators about once a year — ideally in early autumn, before the first cold snap — and any time a radiator goes cold at the top, takes too long to warm up, or gurgles when the heating fires. That is the short answer to how often bleed radiators needs doing in a UK home. The longer answer, and the four other small boiler habits that quietly save the most money, is what most homeowners miss.

How often should you bleed your radiators?

For most UK homes, once a year is the right cadence — early September or October, just before you switch the heating back on. Air gathers over the summer when the pump sits idle, and bleeding releases it so hot water can fill the full panel.

You also bleed reactively, not on a schedule, whenever a radiator shows one of these signs:

• The top of the panel stays cold while the bottom is hot.

• A radiator takes noticeably longer than the others to warm up.

• You hear a gurgle, hiss or knocking when the heating fires.

• A radiator does not warm up at all with the valves open.

Bleeding the same radiator more than twice a heating season is not normal — it usually means air is being pulled in (a pinhole leak, a worn pump seal, a failing automatic air vent) and you should book a heating engineer rather than keep bleeding.

How to bleed a radiator safely

You need a radiator bleed key (about £2 from any UK DIY shop), an old towel and a small cup. The job takes ten minutes.

  1. Run the heating for 15 minutes, then turn it off and wait until the radiators are warm but not hot.

  2. Start with the radiator furthest from the boiler on the ground floor, and work upwards and outwards.

  3. Hold the towel under the bleed valve (small square nut at the top corner) and turn the key a quarter-turn anticlockwise. You will hear a hiss.

  4. Wait for water to dribble out — not spit, dribble — then close the valve.

  5. Repeat on each radiator. Allow ten minutes for the system to settle.

  6. Check the boiler pressure gauge. It will almost certainly have dropped.

The last step is where most DIY bleeding goes wrong: people forget to repressurise. A combi boiler running below 1 bar will short-cycle, lock out, or fail to fire on a cold morning. Top up using the filling loop (the silver braided hose under the boiler) until the gauge reads 1.0–1.5 bar cold, then close the loop fully — leaving it open is a common cause of mystery leaks under floorboards.

The other small boiler habits that matter more than bleeding

Bleeding is the radiator habit everyone has heard of. These four are the ones that actually keep a boiler alive into year fifteen.

Check the system pressure monthly

Glance at the gauge on the front of the boiler once a month, all year round. It should sit at 1.0–1.5 bar cold and rise to about 2.0 bar hot. A pressure that keeps dropping below 1 bar is the system telling you something is leaking — under a floorboard, behind a radiator, or inside the boiler. Catch it in week one and it is a £200 fix; catch it in month six and it is a corroded heat exchanger and a new boiler.

Run the heating for ten minutes in summer

Once a month between May and September, switch the central heating on for ten minutes — long enough for the pump to spin, the diverter valve to swing and the radiator valves to actuate. A pump that sits still from April to October seizes; a diverter valve that never moves sticks open. The most common no-heat call on the first cold morning of October is a stuck diverter, and ten minutes in July prevents it.

Empty and clean the magnetic filter

If your system was installed or last serviced from about 2012 onwards you almost certainly have a magnetic filter (Magnaclean, Adey, Fernox, Spirotech) plumbed in near the boiler. It catches the black iron-oxide sludge that wears out pumps and clogs heat exchangers. The filter should be drained and wiped clean at every annual service — never let a Gas Safe engineer leave without confirming they did it.

Top up the central heating inhibitor every five years

Inhibitor (Sentinel X100 and Fernox F1 are the common brands) is the chemical in your system water that stops your radiators rusting from the inside. Drain a small amount of system water into a clear glass at the lowest drain-off point: if it is the colour of weak tea, the inhibitor has gone. After about five years, or any time the system has been drained for new radiators, the dose needs topping up. A heating engineer adds it during a service for around £25–£60 in 2026.

These four are unglamorous and none of them is bleeding the radiators. They are also, in that order, what separates a 20-year-old boiler from a 10-year-old one.

When the symptoms mean something bigger

Bleeding fixes air. It does not fix any of the following.

• A radiator cold at the bottom, not the top: sludge build-up, needs a power flush.

• A boiler that fires for 30 seconds then cuts out: short-cycling, usually low pressure or a flow-rate fault.

• Banging pipes (kettling): limescale on the heat exchanger, common in hard-water areas south and east of a line from the Wash to the Severn.

• A faint, persistent smell of gas: stop reading, leave the house, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.

Any of these is a Gas Safe call, not a bleed key.

What to do in the next 30 minutes

• Find the bleed key in the drawer it lives in — or order one before you need it.

• Note the date of your last boiler service. If it was more than 14 months ago, book the next one now: services should be annual to keep most manufacturer warranties valid.

• Run the heating for ten minutes if you have not since April.

• Take a photo of the boiler pressure gauge and the service sticker on the side of the boiler.

Do I need to turn the heating off before bleeding a radiator?

Yes. Turn the heating off and let the system cool for at least an hour before bleeding. Bleeding hot radiators risks scalding water spraying from the valve, and the air in a hot, pressurised system behaves differently — you can pull more air in than you let out.

Why does my radiator need bleeding every few weeks?

That is not normal. Repeated bleeding usually means air is being drawn into the system from a leak, a worn pump seal, a failing automatic air vent in the airing cupboard, or a pinhole in a hidden pipe. Book a Gas Safe engineer — repeated refilling also dilutes your inhibitor and accelerates rust.

Is bleeding radiators part of an annual boiler service?
