Your Boiler Pressure Keeps Dropping — Here’s What’s Going On
You’ve topped it up twice this month. The needle sits fine for a week, then sags back towards zero and the boiler sulks. It’s not dangerous in the way a gas smell is dangerous, but a boiler pressure dropping repeatedly is your heating system telling you that water is going somewhere it shouldn’t, and that something in the house is quietly getting wetter.
The short answer
If you’re refilling more than about twice a year, you have a fault — not a quirk. A sealed heating system is exactly that: sealed. The water in your radiators is the same water it was last winter. It should not need replacing, and every top-up you do puts fresh oxygenated water into a system that corrodes faster because of it.
There are three realistic causes, and they narrow down quickly:
• A leak somewhere in the pipework, a radiator valve, or a joint under a floor.
• A failed expansion vessel inside the boiler, which is the most common cause by a distance and the least obvious.
• A discharging pressure relief valve, which usually means the vessel has already failed and the system is venting outside.
Only the first makes a mess you can see. The other two are why people spend two winters topping up a boiler and never find the puddle.
What the gauge should read
On most sealed UK systems the gauge should sit around 1.0 to 1.5 bar when the heating is off and the system is cold. When the heating runs and the water expands it will climb — often to 2 bar or a little above — and settle back as things cool. That movement is normal.

Cause one: an actual leak
Leaks announce themselves if you look in the right places. Radiator valves are the usual suspect — feel around the spindle and the tail with a dry tissue rather than a finger, because a slow weep evaporates before it drips. Check under the boiler, around visible pipework, and along the skirting near radiators for staining or blown paint.
Under-floor pipework is the version nobody wants. In a 1990s terrace with pipes buried in a screed floor, a pinhole can run for months with nothing visible upstairs beyond a warm patch of floor and a gauge that keeps falling. Engineers find these with thermal imaging or a pressure test, not by looking.
Cause two: the expansion vessel
This is the one most people have never heard of and most engineers see weekly.
Inside your boiler is a sealed vessel divided by a rubber diaphragm — water on one side, pressurised air on the other. When the system heats up, that air cushion absorbs the extra volume. Over years the air charge leaks away or the diaphragm perforates. With the cushion gone, heating the system spikes the pressure, the relief valve opens to protect the boiler, and water discharges outside through a small copper pipe on the external wall.
Then everything cools and the gauge reads low. Nothing has leaked inside the house. You top it up, and the cycle runs again next week.
Be blunt about this: repeatedly topping up a boiler is not maintenance, it’s masking. Every refill dumps oxygen-rich mains water into a sealed circuit designed never to receive any, and that oxygen is what turns the black sludge in your radiators into pump failures and cold spots. The top-up feels like a fix because the boiler fires again. You’re buying a fortnight and paying for it in corrosion.
Cause three: the pressure relief valve
Sometimes the valve itself is the problem — debris on the seat, or a valve that’s been discharging so long it no longer reseats. The tell is the same: a copper pipe on the outside wall near the boiler that’s damp, dripping, or shows a chalky limescale trail down the brickwork. Go outside and look at it. Thirty seconds, and it’s the most useful thing you can check before anyone quotes you.
What this costs to put right
An expansion vessel recharge is a short job, often folded into the price of a diagnostic visit. A replacement vessel is the bigger number, typically low hundreds fitted. A leak on accessible pipework is usually cheap; a leak under a solid floor is not, and the cost is in the finding rather than the fixing. Either way, a diagnostic call-out is the cheapest money you’ll spend here, because it converts “it keeps dropping” into a named part.

You can read the gauge, use the filling loop your manufacturer’s manual describes, and look for water indoors and out.

• Check the skirting and floor near each radiator for staining, lifted paint or a warm patch underfoot.
• Note the make, model and installation date from the manual — an engineer will ask, and the age decides whether a repair is sensible.
