With the third summer heatwave warning of 2026 already issued and the energy price cap still sitting north of £1,700 a year for a typical home, the question on every kitchen table is the same: how do you keep the house liveable without watching the smart meter spin? The cheapest way to cool a UK home in 2026 is almost never the one the adverts push. Air conditioning is the headline answer, but for most homes it is the worst-value one. The real wins are cheaper, duller, and start before the sun comes up.

This guide ranks the options by what they actually cost to run — in pounds, not adjectives — so you can spend £0 where it counts and only reach for the plug-in fan, or the AC unit, when nothing else will do.

Start with the free stuff: the cheapest cooling costs nothing

Before you buy a single fan, the most cost-effective cooling in any UK home is timing and airflow. British houses are built to trap heat — brilliant in January, miserable in July. The trick is to work with the daily temperature swing rather than against it.

Close up by day, open up at night

On a hot day, the air outside is usually warmer than the air inside until late afternoon. Keep windows shut and curtains or blinds drawn on the sunny side of the house from mid-morning. Then, once the outside temperature drops below the inside temperature — typically after 9pm — open windows on opposite sides of the house to pull a through-draught and flush the warm air out overnight. This single habit costs nothing and is the backbone of cheap home cooling.

Block the sun before it gets in

Roughly a third of a room’s heat comes through the windows. External shading — a closed blind, a £15 reflective film, or even a light-coloured sheet — stops heat before it enters, which is far more effective than trying to remove it once it’s inside. South- and west-facing rooms benefit most.

Fans: the best value cooling you can buy

If free measures aren’t enough, a fan is the cheapest appliance you can run. A typical pedestal or tower fan draws around 40–60 watts. The wet-towel trick

Hang a damp towel or sheet in front of an open window with a fan behind it. As the breeze passes through the wet fabric, evaporation drops the air temperature by a couple of degrees. It’s crude, it’s free, and on a dry night it works better than most plug-in “air coolers” sold online.

Here’s the honest opinion most cooling guides won’t give you: portable evaporative “air coolers” are a waste of money in Britain. They rely on dry air to work, and a muggy UK summer night is exactly when they fail. You pay £80–£150 for a noisy box that adds humidity to an already sticky room. Portable air conditioning: when it’s worth it, and when it isn’t

A single-hose portable AC unit is the option most people jump to, and it does cool air properly. But it’s the most expensive route by a wide margin. A 2.5kW portable unit draws around 1kW of electricity, so running it for eight hours can cost £2–£3 a night — ten to twenty times the cost of a fan.

Single-hose units also work against themselves: they expel hot air out of the window but suck replacement air in from the rest of the house, dragging warm air in behind them. A dual-hose unit is more efficient but pricier to buy. If you do go portable, buy the smallest unit that suits the room, seal the window kit properly, and only cool the room you’re actually in — never the whole house.

Fixed air conditioning and the EPC catch

Permanent split-system air conditioning cools and runs more efficiently than any portable, and a modern air-to-air heat pump can reverse in winter to heat too. But installation runs from £1,500 to £3,000 for a single room, it may need planning permission for external units in some areas, and — the part installers rarely mention — adding cooling can affect how your home is assessed. Cooling the fabric of the house, not just the air

The cheapest long-term cooling is the same thing that keeps you warm in winter: insulation.
